The Leatherman Kick is an impressive pocket tool - a little smaller than the original PST, but at a fraction of the weight. The Leatherman Kick is the smallest of a series of three tools created by Leatherman, the other two are the Fuse and the Blast.
Leatherman Kick - Lighter In Weight
The Leatherman Kick includes plastic inlaid into the body of the multi tool to make it substantially more comfortable to carry than the previous PST and PST II models. The Leatherman Kick is a very welcome addition, as anyone who has owned or made use of a PST will confirm! The pliers head has been redesigned to maximize strength without affecting the multi tool's size or mass, and seems to have made a difference- they are peculiar to look at for those that are used to other models, but this is a tool, not a fashion show, and they do the job.
The Leatherman Kick also includes a phillips screwdriver, can/bottle opener, a couple of flathead screwdrivers, plus a clip- point blade. The tool range may be minimal on this one, although remember, it is the smallest of a series of models. The upside is that the tools (specifically the screwdrivers) appear to be a little better than other multi's - the shafts are somewhat longer, allowing a slightly more versatility than you might be used to, and an improved chance at difficult to access screws. It's a small point, but it really does make a difference - especially if it's the only tool you have at the ready and the screw is buried inside of something.
Note the Extended Screwdriver
Without a doubt, the Kick is a nice tool, but it does have it's negatives. Because of it's light weight, the Kick feels inadequate. As it is supported by Leatherman's 25 year guarantee, it is very well made, however compared to several other tools both bigger and smaller, it doesn't appear to be quite as robust. Also, it may come across as a little small to people with big hands.
On an important note, despite the low number of tools on the Kick, it does suffer from Leatherman's infamous curse, tool clumping. Why is it that a handle with just 3 tools built in, all come out whenever you try to get only one? With revised designs of pocket tools, this malfunction should be a distant memory.
The Leatherman Kick is good value for money, but not a good choice for a regular user or a bigger person. I would say it is better suited as a small tool for a lady's purse or as a kid's first tool. It could be referred to as a "cute" tool for people that rarely need tools although like to be prepared.
